Right To Work
Virginia’s likely voters express strong pro-business attitudes. Nearly nine-in-ten (89%) likely voters agree with the statement “Workers should never be forced against their will to join a union or pay dues to a union as part of their job.”
There is cross-partisan agreement, with 95% of Republicans, 91% of Independents, and 83% of Democrats agreeing with the statement.
An equal share of white, Black, and Hispanic voters agree that workers should never be forced to pay dues (89%).
Asked a different way, 77% of likely voters agree that workers should be able to decide for themselves to pay union dues given that those dues often go to political candidates and causes. 23% say union contracts cover all workers, so all workers covered by union contracts should pay at least some union dues.
The data is not entirely negative for unions in the Commonwealth, as 72% of likely voters agree that public sector employees should be allowed to strike for higher wages and benefits.
