Political Lesson of the Day:
Campaigns are won in the beginning, not the end.
In 2025, three out of four major party gubernatorial nominees recommend running on making life affordable.
The fourth nominee is focused on cultural wedge issues.
Virginia Democratic nominee for governor, Abigail Spanberger, is running on her Affordable Virginia Plan. Here’s the lead page on her website section entitled: Values
Schools. Growth. Affordable.
New Jersey Republican nominee Jack Ciattarelli’s issues page on his website focuses on affordability highlighted by the phrase Make New Jersey Affordable Again.
(Q - When was the Garden State affordable?)
Ciattarelli’s opponent, Democratic nominee Mikie Sherill’s website punches her landing page:
A quick scroll down and you see:
Three nominees with branded plans based on their first name which makes it more personal and less partisan.
The website of Virginia Republican nominee, Lt. Governor Winsome Earle-Sears, on the other hand, leads off with her speaking directly to the camera on Moving Virginia Forward:
Since there is no Issue section on her website, it would be hard to compare Winsome’s plan to Abigail’s; however, just below the video one finds a Press section heavy on cultural wedge issues.
We’ll see which direction the voters of the Garden State and Commonwealth of Virginia choose this year, but so far it appears the Democrats are poised to begin a comeback by focusing on Affordability.
Reminder - New York City Democratic mayoral nominee, Zohran Mamdani, won his primary by focusing on Affordability as well.
Polling shows Democrats leading Republicans this year with many insiders wondering if the GOP will finish closer in New Jersey than Virginia.
